The UVA and United Way of Greater Charlottesville partnership combines our University employees’ deep commitment to the community we call home and United Way’s 80 years of experience administering local giving campaigns. Every dollar UVA employees contribute through United Way will go to the participating local nonprofits of their choice. Approximately 100 local organizations are participating in the campaign. There is an e-pledge site for UVA academic and Medical Center employees and a web page for UVA-affiliated employees.
UVA employees have a long, proud history of supporting nonprofits that provide important services including food resources, healthcare, education, programs for youth, crisis support and housing assistance. People in our communities depend on local nonprofits every day. Thanks to Give Where You Live, local nonprofits can depend on the generosity of Hoos.
With one of the largest workforces in the region, UVA is encouraging its employees to support local nonprofits serving their neighbors.
The University of Virginia was a co-sponsor of United Way’s 35th annual Laurence E. Richardson Day of Caring. On Sept. 16, more than 1,400 UVA employees volunteered to tackle regional community service projects. How did it go? See for yourself! Day of Caring 2026.
More than 1,400 employees volunteered Wednesday as UVA and United Way launched a new campaign to support local nonprofits.
UVA employee generosity during the Give Where You Live campaign will provide the financial support that helps local nonprofits accomplish their important work in our community. Visit United Way of Greater Charlottesville’s e-pledge site for UVA academic and Medical Center employees or web page for employees of UVA-affiliated units. Find one (or more!) nonprofits with a mission close to your heart, then pledge or donate. UVA academic and Medical Center employees can pledge through payroll deduction or make one-time donations by credit or debit cards. Employees of UVA-affiliated units can donate via credit or debit cards. Your participation will help strengthen the community organizations that connect us and continue UVA’s mission to be a leader that serves others.
Give Where You Live is the University of Virginia’s new partnership with United Way of Greater Charlottesville, focused on supporting local nonprofits. The program offers UVA academic and Medical Center employees the opportunity to pledge their ongoing support to participating local organizations through payroll deduction, or to make one-time donations with credit or debit cards. Employees of UVA-affiliated units can make donations via credit or debit cards.
If you’re a UVA academic or Medical Center employee, you can visit United Way’s e-pledge site and choose from approximately 100 local organizations to support. (You will be asked to sign in using your NetBadge credentials.) If you pledge your donations by payroll deduction, the actual deductions will begin with your first paycheck of 2027 and continue in equal amounts through the 26 pay periods in the calendar year. You can specify your donation as a total dollar amount to be divided among the pay periods or a percentage of your pay. One-time donations by credit or debit cards are charged immediately and will appear on your next card statement. UVA Human Resources is working closely with United Way of Greater Charlottesville to ensure a seamless, transparent and secure process. Ultimately, your method or amount of giving isn’t as important as your desire to strengthen the Charlottesville-area community by supporting local nonprofits. All contributions are welcome and encouraged. Employees of other UVA-affiliated organizations may visit this United Way web page to make credit or debit card donations to the participating organization of your choice.
When you visit United Way of Greater Charlottesville’s e-pledge site starting Sept. 16, you will be offered the opportunity to select from a list of approximately 100 nonprofits doing important work in our communities, representing a wide range of missions and clients. United Way has vetted the nonprofits through the process the organizations use to participate in the annual Day of Caring community service event. When you make a pledge via payroll deduction or donate via credit/debit card, you can choose a maximum of four nonprofits to support. The minimum donation to each charity is $5.
Only local nonprofit organizations that have hosted volunteer service projects in recent United Way Day of Caring events are eligible to be part of the 2026 Give Where You Live campaign. This process ensures that the nonprofits are vetted by United Way and incorporated into their donation system, and ties eligibility to active community engagement opportunities for UVA employees. If you don't see your favorite nonprofit organization listed on the e-pledge site for this year's Give Where You Live campaign, please encourage them to contact United Way of Greater Charlottesville to learn how to be included in future giving campaigns: GiveWhereYouLive@unitedwaycville.org, (434) 459-0506.
UVA’s Give Where You Live campaign begins Sept. 16 and continues until Dec. 18.
